1. THE SETUP (week 1 )
The basics of the studio. Room acoustics, positioning, cables, power, wiring, speakers and more: this is the first step in understanding how the equipment interacts and functions properly in the studio and control room.
Amplifiers, compressors, limiters, gates, reverbs, converters and patching. How to utilize the basic outboard gear found in the studio racks. This section will explore and discuss in-depth the signal path and gain structure from the source to the storage medium, as well as strategies for signal optimization during tracking.
Learn to multitrack, overdub, edit, process and run a basic mix in industry standard Digital Audio Workstation formats such as Pro Tools, Acid Pro, Sonar, Logic, Cubase, etc. Also, basic mix automation, track editing and stereo pre-mastering for CD and mp3.
PART TWO: MIXING & PRODUCING
A great mix is what differentiates the professional engineer/producer from the novice. Here we will look at mixing techniques used by the professionals to properly carve out a mix and get that polished “like a record” sound. We will also experiment with different musical styles, which may require different approaches - some loud and hyped (pop, rock, R&B), some organic (folk, jazz, classical)and some in between.
We'll touch on basic music theory, looping techniques, MIDI and music production techniques to produce a song in the studio for your own portfolio. We will build a track from the ground up, “producing” it as we go, and seeing it though a final mix and master.
Songwriters, bands, solo singers, voice-over artists, publishers all have different demands and paces when working in a recording environment. You'll learn the subtleties of setting the stage for a great performance, while keeping the session time running at maximum efficiency. You'll also, “shadow” recording sessions as an assistant engineer and get hands-on real world experience.
